Pietje passed away on 7 January 1958 in Wilnis, Utrecht, at the age of 64. They had been married 40 years.
At the age of 73, Dirk visited family in New Zealand, travelling with Bert and Dymphna Koestal. They arrived in Wellington on the ship Willem Ruys on 20 April 1964.[3] Dirk returned home on the same ship, departing Wellington on 6 September 1964.[4]Bert and Dymphna Koestal returned home 6 weeks later.
Dirk died on 4 March 1983 in Wilnis, Utrecht, at the age of 92. His was buried in the family plot at the Mijdrecht-Wilnis Roman Catholic church.[5]
