Biography

Theodorus Martinus "Dirk" van Oostrom was born on 16 June 1890 in Abcoude-Proostdij, Utrecht, Netherlands, to Elisabeth Gerarda Peek, age 39, and Gijsbertus van Oostrom, age 52.[1]

He was born at 18:30 in the family home on their farm "Landlust" at Winkeldijk 4, 1391 Abcoude.

Theodorus married Petronella Maria Cornelia Johanna "Pietje" de Wit in Abcoude-Proostdij, Utrecht, on 10 May 1917 when he was 26 years old and she was 24.[2] They had 11 children in 16 years.

Pietje passed away on 7 January 1958 in Wilnis, Utrecht, at the age of 64. They had been married 40 years.

At the age of 73, Dirk visited family in New Zealand, travelling with Bert and Dymphna Koestal. They arrived in Wellington on the ship Willem Ruys on 20 April 1964.[3] Dirk returned home on the same ship, departing Wellington on 6 September 1964.[4] Bert and Dymphna Koestal returned home 6 weeks later.

Dirk died on 4 March 1983 in Wilnis, Utrecht, at the age of 92. His was buried in the family plot at the Mijdrecht-Wilnis Roman Catholic church.[5]

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Albert van Oostrom, FTDNA kit #MI16400, and his 5th cousin Pieter van Oostrum, FTDNA kit #692382, match at a Genetic Distance of 2 on 37 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Antonius van Oostrum. FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 6 generations is 77.81% and within the last 7 generations is 84.11%.
